Baros · Soneva Jani

9 nights 2 bases April 7 – 16, 2026 8.70

Two atolls, one horizon, just the two of you

Nine nights, two contrasting islands, and almost no moving. You begin at Baros — a pocket-sized North Malé island wrapped in one of the country's finest house reefs, reached by a 25-minute speedboat so you're in the water by lunch. Then a single seaplane lifts you north to Soneva Jani, where overwater villas float on a 5.6-kilometre lagoon and the designed peak waits: a lantern-lit table for two on a bare strip of sand at sunset.

Private sandbank dinner at sunset

The standout moment

Private sandbank dinner at sunset

18:25 · golden hour, table set as the sun drops to the lagoon rim

A small boat drops you at a bare crescent of sand in open water off Soneva Jani — no villas, no other guests, only a lantern-lit table, a chef and steward who fade into the background, and the Indian Ocean on every side. Time it for 18:25, when the sky goes copper and the lagoon turns to mercury; the tide narrows the sand as you eat, so the island feels like it is being given to you and quietly taken back. Champagne on ice, a four-course menu you set that morning, and when the staff withdraw it is genuinely just the two of you under the first stars.

Insider notes · from forums + locals

  • 01

At Baros, request a Water Pool Villa at the reef end of the jetty

The villas at the far, reef-facing end of the overwater jetty sit directly over the house-reef drop-off — you can step down the ladder and be among turtles and eagle rays without swimming out. Ask reservations to flag a reef-end villa at booking; it is the single best snorkelling-from-your-deck position on the island.

  • 02

Book the Piano Deck for sunset, not after dark

The Piano Deck is a private platform floating in the lagoon. Reserve it for the 18:20 sunset seating rather than a later slot — the light on the water is the whole point, and the deck cools fast once the sun is gone. Ask the chef to build the menu around the reef catch.

  • 03

Design the Soneva Jani sandbank menu that morning

The private sandbank dinner is bespoke — tell your barefoot host at breakfast and the chef will build a four-course menu to your taste, then it is rowed out with the lanterns. Lock the time at 18:25 so you are seated as the sun hits the lagoon rim, and confirm a weather-contingency date when you book.

So Starstruck seats only four tables — reserve early

The overwater observatory dining experience has just four tables and a resident astronomer on a 16-inch telescope. It books out; request it the moment your stay is confirmed and ask for a clear-sky night mid-stay so you have a fallback if clouds roll in.

The Crab Shack earned 'world's most romantic' for a reason — go at golden hour

CNN once voted it the world's most romantic restaurant. Arrive around 18:30 so you catch the last light over the water before the Sri Lankan mud-crab curry; it's casual, toes-in-the-sand, and a perfect contrast to the formal observatory night.

  • 06

Do day one as a speedboat island on purpose

Putting Baros first means no seaplane on arrival day — you clear Velana and are in the water within an hour, even on a late flight, since the speedboat runs at night. Save the seaplane for the inter-base move when you're rested and it becomes a scenic flight rather than a jet-lagged scramble.

  • 07

Retract the villa roof — but mind the dew and bugs

Soneva Jani's water villas have a retractable bedroom roof for sleeping under the stars. It's magical on a clear, calm night; close it before dawn as humidity returns, and use the provided net on still nights near the lagoon edge. Ask your host to demo the mechanism on arrival.

Time the departure seaplane against your flight home

Because seaplanes stop around 15:30, an evening flight out of Velana is ideal — you get a full final morning on the lagoon, then fly to MLE with time to spare. Avoid an early-morning international departure that would force you off the island the afternoon before.
